Avery was tormented about the growth on this upper lip so often that he ate his lunch in the teacher’s lounge everyday

Avery (last name withheld for privacy) spent most of his young life feeling ugly and tormented. He was born with a small growth above his upper lip. Although the growth was not extremely large it was visible to anyone who looked at him. Since the growth was dark and pigmented it was a rather significant identification mark on his face. Avery’s mother tried to comfort him with words of encouragement and affection, but it was no match for his peers who teased him unmercifully. Avery’s   school counselor  phoned ASPS board certified plastic surgeon Joseph Serota MD to ask about the cost of a procedure that would remove the  growth. She knew that the family could not afford to pay, so the teachers that knew Avery had decided to raise money to have the cost of the procedure covered for him. They just needed to know how much money to raise..

   When Dr Serota consulted with Avery and heard his painful story, he told Avery’s mother , and school counselor that he would perform the surgery pro bono. When asked why he would perform this procedure at no charge Dr Serota replied “Avery had been subjected to ridicule and bullying because of the growth on his face. As an adolescent, I myself had sustained an injury that resulted in a disfiguring scar on my face, so I can understand what sort of negative impact a facial lesion can impress upon a child. I was fortunate that my parents could afford the cost of a reconstructive surgery performed by a skilled plastic surgeon. Today there is no evidence of that scar remaining and this is what inspired me to pursue medicine, namely plastic surgery. Correcting this deformity for Avery was an opportunity to make an impact on a very impressionable and intelligent young man. This minor procedure resulted in a newfound confidence and self assured poise for Avery. It was my privilege to be able to provide this service to him and hope that he will find an opportunity to pay it forward, as well.

With healthcare cost a major topic on the minds of many Americans reconstructive surgeries like Avery’s are very difficult to have covered by insurance..” In my opinion reconstructive cases (correction due to disease, deformity or traumatic injury) are necessary for the social/emotional well being of a child and should certainly be covered under health insurance, however this is rarely the case these days. In Avery’s situation, the procedure was minor, anesthesia was not a factor and the risk was minimal, so there was little reason not to proceed. I believe that a parent should always weigh the benefits with the risks when making these types of decisions. If the family has genuine concerns for the social and emotional well being of a child they should consult a board certified plastic surgeon. If the surgeon agrees that the patient is a good candidate, a correctional procedure can alleviate an incredible amount of unnecessary stress from an adolescent.’ says Dr Serota.

   Avery is a happy well adjusted little boy. The growth is gone and the scar is barely visible. “Thank you Dr Serota, you are as nice as my 4^th grade teacher” Avery wrote in his thank you note.

Skin cancer can be deadly.

A recent local article revealed information about a new drug for treatment of Melanoma.  Melanoma is the deadliest form of skin cancer and this new experimental drug may signal a new era in treatment. Advanced melanoma spreads cancer from skin to the rest of the body and chances for recovery have been slim. The last time a drug was approved for treatment was 10 years ago and 85% of people had no benefit from the medication. This new experimental drug shrank tumors and got rid of them in some cases. The drug is called PLX 4032, it has been effective in treatment but the cancer tends to return in one year. Scientist are still researching ways to perfect the drug.

Proper skin care is need to avoid skin cancer and the other damaging effects of the environment. Intense cardio helps to slim midsection;but has limits

A recent local article revealed how high intensity cardio can blast fat particularly in the midsection. By adding intensity to your workout you can blast belly fat faster than a traditional low paced workout. Adding hills to your jog or hikes or raising the resistance on your exercise machine will do the trick. During the last 10 minutes of your work out is wise to kick up the intensity as well.
